Hitlist Number 5

I didn’t quite get a chance to post my new hitlist prior to going on holiday to Wollongong, New South Wales.  I love holidays and I love the chance to explore new backyards.  Half the fun for me is checking out what sights are around and what might be possible to visit.  I like to keep exercising on holiday and it is a great chance to have a little break from the gym, get outside and explore.

After living in Pannawonica, where a 2 hour drive to the closest shopping centre is no big deal, I often look at places to visit anywhere in a 3-4 hour radius from Wollongong.  One year we did a family trip to Canberra and this trip I did look at travelling to the Snowy Mountains to hike Mt Kosciuszko, the tallest peak in Australia.  I changed my mind for our family trip because the new location had a lot more to do in our short timeframes and lots of fun for young and old.  I have also included a couple of items to help me kickstart my health and fitness when we arrive back in Pannawonica.  Short and sweet for this hitlist.

Here, There, and Everywhere

Hello my poor, neglected blog and hello to anyone out there still following along.  I feel like I have been here, there, and everywhere this hitlist with nothing going to plan.  Looking back over the last few months I actually have travelled some miles.  I have been to Perth three times, which is 4 hours driving and 4 hours flying each return trip, I have been to Bali which should have been for a week but ended up being two weeks away due to volcanic ash playing havoc with flight plans, and we snuck in a trip to Karijini National Park which is 10hrs driving to make the return trip from Pannawonica, all in the space of three months.  Phew…..it is time to slow down a little and take a breath.  I honestly didn’t know where to start after not posting for so long, therefore I decided to review my current hitlist and see where I am at with it.

Well, I did complete a ride past the Boot Tree while participating in the Tour de Panna, and I hiked up Tank Hill and walked the Yaburara Trail in Karratha which you can read about here.  Unfortunately I didn’t end up running in the Pannawonica City to Surf due to a change in dates, but was still able to use that goal for training purposes.  Hiking Mt Batur in Bali was fantastic and Yoga in Ubud was also ticked off the list.  I will be writing a post about our trip to Bali and all the great things to do there.  Due to circumstances and life I had to make a few changes to some items on the hitlist.  Visiting Karijini was definitely on my WA bucketlist and when the opportunity presented itself we jumped at the chance and  I can’t wait to catch up on the blog post for that adventure.  Obviously that meant we bumped the trip to Python’s Pool but it is not forgotten.  The other change was swapping the MTB ride to Pannawonica Hill for the kids, to organising the Great Aussie Camp Out.  The kids had a lot of fun on the camp out and you can read all about it here.

That only leaves two items on the current hitlist.  I have to admit to a fail on the new recipe front, I figure its enough that I am actually feeding my kids at all at the moment, right?  The final item on the hitlist is definitely still on my radar and I want to lock in a new challenge by the end of the year.  There are a few options to explore but I can’t decide which one to commit to.  Decisions, decisions.

On the blog front I am making a dedicated effort to write at least one post a week until the end of the year so I will see you with another post soon!

Tour de Panna

It has been a while since I have done a longer bike ride and I have never actually done a road ride.  So when the Tour de Panna rolled around of course I had to sign up and give it a go.  This race is an annual event in Pannawonica and is a chance to see the spectacular scenery in all its glory.  It is a very laid back event, everyone meets at 5am in the morning to load the bikes before a bus drops all the riders at the intersection of the Pannawonica turnoff and the North West Coastal highway.  It is 46km from town and it feels like you have been dropped out in the middle of nowhere.  With very little pomp and ceremony we were underway, here are some pictures to tell the story.

And that’s it all done.  Up at 4.30am, just over 2hrs to complete the ride and back home relaxing by 9am.  Not a bad way to start a Sunday morning!

Hitlist Number 3 – The Wrap Up

Have a look back over your last 12 weeks…..are you happy with what you have achieved?  Or are you still doing the same things, going to the same places, and achieving the same old results?  Sometimes it is enough that we make it through the week, but occasionally I want to try something different and feel like I am still progressing in some way and not just stuck on the treadmill of life.  I’m not talking about earth shattering achievements either.  It may be that you finally stopped in to checkout the short trail and lookout that you pass on the way home from work every day, or that you started jogging again, or simply signed up for the gym for the first time.  Those little deviations from the normal create momentum and opportunity for even bigger achievements.

A quick look back over my last 12 weeks or so and I have been able to complete most of Hitlist No.3.  Doing a little happy dance…..

Hitlist 3.2

1.  Completed the Panna 8 Week Body Fat Challenge – Didn’t quite lose the 5kg that I wanted but that is still a work in progress.

2.  I did find myself a fantastic training partner just by putting a request on a noticeboard.  Take a risk, ask your friends, ask another parent at school, or place a note on the noticeboard at your gym,  ask whether anyone wants to train together.  It is one of the easiest ways to help yourself reach your health goals.

3.  Completed all the different classes on the Panna Gym Timetable – happened to try them all in one week just for fun!  Keep trying new things you never know where it may lead you.

4.  Swim 2km.  Yep, did that even though it was a cold week that week (21 degrees in the water).  Quite chuffed that I can still swim 2km without too many problems, even managed 10 x 50m on the minute, alternating freestyle, backstroke, and breastroke.

5.  Completed the Mothers Day Classic 4km Family Fun Run – what a great challenge that was.

6.  Really proud to say that we managed to train at least twice a week for over 10 weeks.  Not always smooth sailing but definitely worth the effort.  You can read about it in this post.

7.  Kayak and Snorkel the Coral Bay Kayak Trail – I did kayak and snorkel in Coral Bay and it was stunning….I may not have completed the whole 2km of the official kayak trail.  Details, details.

8.  MTB to Pannawonica Hill was definitely completed and even did it again and dragged my training partner along just to be sure!  Great ride.

9.  Completed the Foundations of Technology for Healthy Living via the University of Tasmania.  This was actually quite an interesting course and the following bits of information were things that stood out for me:

10.  Clean up the diet and try some new recipes.  Our diet on the whole has improved but I have to admit that I did not get around to trying as many new recipes as I wanted to so I may need to carry this one over to the next one!

Riding to Pannawonica Hill

When we moved to Pannawonica, the most well known landmark that cropped up was Pannawonica Hill.  Apparently, the township’s name was actually derived from nearby Pannawonica Hill.  According to Wikipedia the hill was named by a surveyor in 1885 after the corresponding Aboriginal placename which is said to mean “the hill that came from the sea”. The traditional legend is that two local Aboriginal tribes were arguing over the ownership of the hill which was located by the sea. The sea spirit decided to resolve the dispute by moving the hill inland. As the hill was dragged over the land it left a deep indentation which became the Robe River.   With such cultural and historical relevance to the town it had to go on my Hitlist, and in the wet season it was a good place for a swim too.

Last week the family and I took the 4WD out to Panna Hill to check it out and go for a quick swim.  We had recently had a little rain so there was some nice mud puddles to drive through which kept the boys happy and the river was quite full as well so it was great for swimming.  I was happy to discover that the drive out was under 10km so this hitlist item would not be a difficult one to complete!

Due to the fact that we are in a remote location and I didn’t really want to get up close and personal with any of the local snakes while on my own, I decided that the hubby would drive the kids out for a swim and kayak while I rode out.  That way he could scare off all the snakes along the way and would be looking out for me if I had a stack or pulled up with a flat tyre.  Win, win.  While I had driven out the week before there is something different about coming across Pannawonica Hill under your own steam, it really is quite….beautiful? spiritual? Quite something that’s for sure and it was a great ride there and back.

So there you have it, mountain bike ride to Pannawonica Hill crossed of my current hitlist.  Quite an easy and scenic 15km return trip from Pannawonica.

Why not explore your own backyard in as many different ways as possible, you will experience a different perspective each and every time!

 

 

Exercise Hitlist No.3 – Off and Running

I seem to have lost my blogging mojo, not for lack of things to write about but just because.  Kids are all at school this year which is amazing and a little depressing to think that I am old enough to have school age children, haha.  To be quite honest I have been fluffing around at home, enjoying the peace and quite, reading and watching TV, and generally being a big, fat lazybones.  It has been lovely….but it has to stop.  So last week I reviewed my new Hitlist, shook it off and got it into working order.  Here is the latest hitlist. Hitlist 3 To prove that I have not been completely unproductive, I have actually managed to get started on a few of these items. Most importantly, I, have a new training partner.  As the new person in town I was a little nervous about how I was going to convince someone to come and train with me.  On the positive side they don’t know what kind of crazy they will be getting into (mwah ha ha ha ha thats supposed to be an evil laugh).  Turns out it was easier than expected.  Pannawonica has an online noticeboard on facebook for town updates, items for sale, services available etc.  I took a big, deep breath and dived right in.  I put a post on the page stating that I was looking for a training partner for the duration of the 8 week challenge, that I have skills that are quite handy for a training partner, and that if there was more than one person interested I would just draw a name out of the hat.  I was a little nervous that there would be nothing but silence and I would be the weird, new girl in town…not a good look….but thankfully I had a very positive response. Phew!  Anyway, back to the point, I have a new training partner which is very exciting.  Maybe a little scary for my new partner, a mother of two who has never really done strength training before, hehehehe….fresh blood.

I have been to four different classes organised by the gym including a Boxing/Cardio class, Circuit class, Yoga, and Spartacus/100 Club.  All that I have been to have been good but I really love the Spartacus class.  This involves about 6 different exercises for example Shuttle Runs, KB Swings, Weighted Lunges, Med Ball Slams, Push Ups, etc and the aim is to complete 100 reps of each exercise in 40 minutes.  You can do them in any order and as many reps at a time as you like, the only catch being that every five minutes you have to join in and do one minute plank.  The same exercises are kept for a 4 week period to allow time to improve and hopefully achieve 100 reps across the board.  It’s awesome.

The Pannawonica 8 week Fat Burn Challenge has commenced this week and I swear I am having chocolate and alcohol withdrawal symptoms which is quite possibly why nothing creative is coming alive on the blog.  Week one in changing dietary habits is always painful.  I usually find after two weeks the cravings drop off significantly but those habits take a while to stick.  Ho hum.  I have started using the ‘My Fitness Pal’ app on my phone which is actually really good.  Easy to use and the break down of macros is great.

Another thing we have done as a family is to register for the nearest Mother’s Day Classic Fun Run which is in Karratha.  We are hoping to train 2-3x/week and build up to running the whole 4km.  To keep us motivated (and not look like a crazy running group) we decided to split the family into two training teams.  Team Rangas includes the red headed twins and myself, while Team Chunky Butts has my husband and both the eldest and youngest children.  I have also downloaded RunKeeper to keep track of our progress.  Yes, look at me embracing my new iPhone technology…wonders will never cease.  Training has been going really well and it is great seeing them excited to beat their time, or run that little bit further.  I also love listening to them chat about their day, it is quickly becoming my favourite part of the day.

Rewind and Review

Now that we have settled in Pannawonica, I have time to do a quick review of my last hitlist.  I think it is really important to acknowledge the things that went well and the things that did not work so well, celebrate all the good stuff, take the lessons learnt, and shrug off any failures or mishaps.  At the end of the day it is all about movement….active movement, forward movement, progress, living life and making the most out of your opportunities. So how did I go with Hitlist No. 2?  To be honest I can’t even remember what was on the list now, I was a little consumed by the Adventurethon but looked forward to reviewing to see what I did get done.Hitlist 2.2

  1.  Run 5km (Couch to 5km running program) – Loved this running program and will be doing this again with the kids in my new hitlist item ‘4km Mother’s Day Classic Fun Run’ with whole family.  Also really glad I achieved my 5km running goal along the cliffs of Kalbarri.Warm up walk to Island Rock which is where I started my run and the boardwalk ended.
  2.   Mundaring Weir Stair Workout – That was painful, only completed 3 full return runs from top to bottom.  Beautiful place to work out though.End of the final stair climb!!  Thank God, stairs officially suck balls!
  3.  Volunteer at OXFAM 100km – I loved this night, such a great atmosphere and very well run.  I liked that I felt that I was giving back in some small way to a good cause and back to events that I love to participate in (without much thought to all the volunteers that make these things happen).This was at the start of my shift, all four members completing the 100km which was quite a feat.  Quite a few teams lost members due to injury or exhaustion.
  4.  Try a Kickboxing Class –  I didn’t get to do this and I still want to do a class.  This was simply that I just couldn’t juggle all my comittments to make it happen.  Another time.
  5. John Forrest National Park Troll Bridge – This was awesome and still my favourite day out with the family.After only 800m we came across the 'Troll Tunnel'.  You have to make it exciting and a little scary for boys.  In we go.....dah da daaaaa (thats supposed to be scary music).
  6. Kayak to Penguin Island – This didn’t happen either sadly.  Realised that I probably didn’t quite have the skills or knowledge to do this on my own and couldn’t justify the expense to do a guided trip at this point in time.
  7.  Kings Park Tree Top Walk/Jacob’s Ladder – This was a great, easy day trip with the kids.treetops2

  8.  Join the local MTB social ride – Everyone should try mountain biking it is such a great way to get and/or stay fit.  Social rides are a great way to meet people, learn great tips and learn about fun places to ride.Love the trails....although trees and I have a love hate relationship.  I often struggle to get through gaps without hitting my handlebars lol.  I'm so cool!!
  9.  Complete my Healthy Exercise Challenge with the kids – Really liked doing these things with the kids and just remembered that I was going to try it during school term and not just on the holidays…hmmm, and this is why we review!Find a local bike path - Where does it take you?
  10.  Trail Run at Bold Park – This didn’t happen as I left it to the last minute, then ran into the calf injury, then ran out of time.  Bummer, will have to keep this at the back of my mind and try and get there next time I am in Perth.
  11.  Participate in the Perth Marathon Club’s 7.5km run along the Esplanade – I feel like I am making a lot of excuses…buuut this was a scheduling clash with my husband’s FIFO roster.  This was a Sunday morning and usually the husband is home except for this very weekend.  I couldn’t very well make the kids wait at the finish line for me….I did think about it.
  12.  Try and MTB once a week – This was about a 16 week block for this hitlist and while I managed to ride every week I think I only managed to actually MTB maybe four times over that period.  This was a fail.
  13.  Organise to be fitted for my bike properly – Success!  I did do this one and very glad I did too.Managed to get on and stay balanced....Yay!
  14.  Sullivan’s Rock to Monadnocks Campsite, Bibbulmun Track –  What do we call this one? 50/50?  I did do a portion of the Bibbulmun Track and walked Sullivan’s Rock, but then failed to go in the planned direction and proceeded to get lost.   Points for trying??Bibb Track
  15.  Complete in Adventurethon Albany – Too right I did, feeling quite proud of that one.

I managed to complete 9 out of 15 items for a 60% completion rate.  Looking back I feel like I achieved so much more.  It just goes to show that it doesn’t matter about the things you don’t do only about the things you do.  I still believe that I complete more when I write them down and plug away.  So get busy dreaming, planning, and most importantly just get outside and move!!

Hitlist No.1 Completed…..Time to Reflect.

I think we all forget sometimes that it is the little steps that make a journey and in taking those little steps we are moving our lives in a new, exciting and somewhat unknown direction.  These items on the hitlist are just one small part of my weekly life.  As a mum of four boys I am often bogged down in the mundane and it is easy to feel like I am in groundhog day and going nowhere fast.  But as I look back at this hitlist, the photos, and the things I have done, I feel a little sense of satisfaction that I am at least moving and achieving something.  I am hopefully giving my boys a love of the outdoors, of enjoying movement in any form and a small taste of setting goals and working towards them.  So yes the hitlist items can be small things, but they are my goals and my chance to scratch out a little time just for me.  I have completed my first hitlist and I have enjoyed each and every item….except maybe the Perth to Fremantle crazy long bike ride!

Progress Report for Hitlist No.1

Well I am chugging along just fine people and crossing things off my hitlist left, right, and centre – bam, bam, bam!  And it feels good to pull out that list and reflect.  Progress is happening one way or another, even if other areas in my life may be a little chaotic at times.  It really was a nice little boost to my day to cross a couple more items off my list.  It actually brings to mind a great post my sister wrote on the importance of celebrating success, no matter how big or small, otherwise why would we go back to put in more hard work?  So here is my little fist pump cause I am a bit excited that I am nearly through this hitlist.
